How does the stock market work?

Investors can purchase and sell ownership (stocks) of different companies on stock markets, which are a type of centralized exchange. The transfer of stock from a seller to a buyer is facilitated by licensed, nationally registered, and regulated brokers on the majority of stock markets throughout the world.

The US-based NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) and NASDAQ (National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations) are two examples of stock exchanges that are subject to regulation. The ease with which we can reach the stock market has never been greater, and each year the entry hurdles get lower.

But this ease of access is not without its dangers. We are all susceptible to different types of investment scams in the investment and stock world, so it is incumbent on us to do our due diligence and protect ourselves and our money from becoming victims of stock fraud and stock scams.

Is the stock market rigged?

The idea that the stock market is fixed is one of the most frequently asked topics and widely held ideas about it. Is it? The SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) and FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority), among other government and non-government organizations, regulate the US stock markets. The SEC and FINRA both have overlapping legal obligations to keep an eye on the stock exchanges and the different brokers that help with stock buying and selling. That doesn't imply we can completely avoid fraud and frauds, though.

Companies like ENRON and Valeant Pharmaceuticals, who engage in illegal accounting and business practices today and in the past, purposefully mislead individual investors. Some dishonest people fabricate 'too good to be true' commercials that lead to Ponzi schemes.
